23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time

This weekend we celebrate the Twenty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time.  In today’s Gospel passage from Luke, Jesus addresses the crowds.  He is very clear about the demands of discipleship and the central place of the cross in following him.   Remember, Jesus is on his way to Jerusalem.  One of the things he says is:  If anyone comes to me without hating his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple. I leave you with two reflection questions:  1) When I hear Jesus demanding that I place him ahead of my family and my own self, what do I think Jesus is asking of me?  2) What is the cost of discipleship for me at this point in my life?

Pastoral Council and Commission Meetings resume this month.  Please join the Pastoral Council for 6:30 PM Mass this Tuesday, September 6. Finance Council will meet on Wednesday, September 7.  After they have had the opportunity to review the Parish Report (2015-2016), it will be published in the bulletin next week.

Commissioning of Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion will take place at the 4:00 PM and 9:30 AM Masses next weekend, September 10 and 11. Please attend whichever Mass is most convenient for you for the commissioning.  Certificates will be presented at that time.

The Banquet at SVU Curtiss Hall for Funding Seminarian Education: I haven’t heard from anyone yet who would like to attend the Banquet fundraiser on Thursday, September 15. The banquet begins at 5:30 PM.  The cost is $65.00 per person or $480.00 for a table of 8.  If you are able to attend, please call the parish office (755-0828) by September 8.  If you are unable to attend but would like to make a donation toward the event, please make a check out to the parish and mark it “Seminarian Fundraiser” and we will make sure it is set aside and passed on for this event.

Special Congratulations to Pam and Bill Menzl who celebrate their 50th Wedding Anniversary this Saturday (September 3)!  May God continue to bless them with many more happy years together!

Please mark your calendars for our Parish Picnic on Sunday, September 18, at 12:00 Noon.  The parish is providing hot dogs and hamburgers and all are asked to bring a dish to pass.  Sign-up sheets have been placed on the bulletin boards at church this weekend.

Blessings on your week!
