Today is the Third Sunday in Ordinary Time. The Gospel passage from Mark emphasizes that after Jesus heard that John the Baptist had been arrested, he went to live in Capernaum by the sea and began to preach. “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand,” he proclaimed. Walking by the Sea of Galilee, he began to call his disciples: Simon Peter, Andrew, James and John. He promised, “Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.” Immediately, they left their nets and boats and followed him. Jesus has called us to follow him as well, to share in his ministry among his people today. We might wonder what made following Jesus so attractive to his disciples that they instantly replied “yes.” Most of us have been followers of Jesus for many years. What is it that makes being a follower of Jesus attractive to us? We know that it has not always been easy. We know that the world in which we live today has many challenges we never experienced years ago. Yet, even in the midst of a culture that sometimes seems to be at odds with what the Church teaches, we remain faithful followers of Christ. We know that there are others, even in our own families, who are not so faithful, who have drifted away from the Church, who are not providing their children a strong foundation in the faith. What is our role, our call from Jesus in these situations? Does Jesus want us to be “fishers of people?” Can we present to others, even family members, an attractive reason for giving Christ a more central place in their lives? How do we reach out to them and give them enticing reasons to enter into the sacramental life of the Church? How do we extend to them the same invitation Jesus gives today: Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand?
