Third Sunday of Advent

Gaudete! Rejoice, for the Third Sunday of Advent is here.  The pink candle is lit.  Rose vestments are worn.  Soon we will be celebrating the Nativity of the Lord.  The enhancing of our worship space has begun.  The Scripture Readings are filled with hope and rejoicing.  In the Gospel from John the Evangelist we once again encounter John the Baptist.  In response to being asked who he is, he states: I am the voice of one crying out in the desert, “make straight the way of the Lord.”  He also says: there is one among you whom you do not recognize, the one who is coming after me, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to untie.  Christ is among us today.  Sometimes we do not recognize him.  This Advent we have been encouraged to be watchful and alert.  This coming week let us reflect upon the ways in which we have experienced Emmanuel, ”God-With-Us,” in our midst as a result of being watchful and alert.  Are we making straight the way of the Lord?

I do hope you are finding the special Advent inserts each week to be spiritually enriching.  Special thanks to Father Jim for providing the subscription to our parish!

We have two opportunities this week to celebrate the sacrament of Penance.  Please note the schedule in today’s bulletin.

It seems that there is a bit of confusion regarding the Fourth Sunday of Advent and Christmas Eve.  Both fall on the same day this year.  There is a Fourth Sunday of Advent this year without a Fourth Week of Advent.  We do have the obligation of attending Mass either Saturday afternoon or Sunday morning to celebrate the Fourth Sunday of Advent.  We also have the obligation to attend a Christmas Mass: either on Christmas Eve (any time 4:00 PM or later) or on Christmas Day.  Conceivably, some individuals/families may be attending Mass twice this next Sunday to celebrate both the Fourth Sunday of Advent and Christmas. Others may be coming to church Saturday afternoon and Sunday evening, Saturday afternoon and Monday morning, or Sunday morning and Monday morning.  As you know, our Christmas Mass schedule is 7:00 PM Christmas Eve and 9:30 AM Christmas Day.
