Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

We celebrate the Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time this weekend.  I would like to highlight two statements of Jesus in the Gospel passage.  First, he exclaims “I give praise to you, Father, for although you have hidden these things from the wise and the learned you have revealed them to little ones.”  Later in the passage, he extends an invitation: “Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest.”  This scripture passage is often chosen for funerals by family members whose loved one has gone through a great deal of suffering.  As I have journeyed with individuals through the process of terminal illness and suffering, time and again, I have experienced how these are the “little ones” to whom God reveals himself and his wisdom.  They have accepted the invitation to come to the Lord Jesus, to rest in him, to trust in him who is present in their pain.  I have even witnessed a joy in the midst of their pain as they enter into a deeper relationship with Christ, who says, “my yoke is easy, and my burden, light.”  We, too, are the “little ones” to whom God has revealed himself in Jesus.  When was the last time we accepted the invitation to rest in the Lord?  How has God blessed us in that experience?

As you know, Saint John Paul II Parish Office Center site located on Carla Drive has been sold to Carrollton Public Schools.  I assured you that once the parish received the check for the purchase of the building and property, I would share with you the details of the sale.    On Thursday, June 29, I received a call from the Diocese and went to the Finance Office to pick up the check.   The total amount the diocese received from Carrollton Public Schools was $251,535.20.  The portion allotted to the parish (after deductions incurred by Carrollton Public Schools) was $250,350.20.  Following fees for the transfer of the title, county transfer tax, state transfer tax, closing cost, and $500.00 on reserve for any other expenses we may incur, the parish received $246,283.45.  At this time, the Finance Council is in the process of refining the 2017-2108 budget (which is due to the diocese August 1) taking into account the 2017-2018 Saginaw Area Catholic Schools assessment, our CSA deficit, adjustments in some of our insurance premiums, and a plan to reduce our SACS assessment. Below are the itemized deductions from the sale of the Carla Drive building and property:

Owner’s Premium: Diversified National Title Agency, LLC                                              $1,266.75

County Transfer Tax                       $   275.00

State transfer Tax                            $1,875.00

½ of the Closing Fee                       $   150.00

Reserved Funds                                               $   500.00

Blessings on your week!
